What Do You Say to a Parent Who Turns 250 and Still Won't Look You in the Eye

"There's a particular kind of conflict that comes with saying 'happy birthday' to someone who has never fully claimed you. That's the relationship. Present but absent. Attentive to your feelings, dismissive of your pain. America turns 250 this year, and for many Black Americans, the celebration arrives with a question attached: What, exactly, are we celebrating—and from where are we allowed to celebrate it?

We've spent generations trying to locate ourselves inside the promise that 'all men are created equal,' searching for belonging within an idea that too often excluded us in practice. And yet, despite the contradictions, we've built culture, community, joy, and wellness in the spaces left unfinished. Perhaps the greatest birthday wish we can offer America isn't another celebration—but the courage to finally tell the truth about itself."
